Yearly celebrations in honor of St. Geronimo and José María Morelos y Pavón

There is always an element that stands out In any images that we see of Janitzio: The monument of José María Morelos y Pavón, located right at the top of the island.

This large statue is Janitzio ́s greatest icon and also one of its main sites to be known by all the people who visit the island. The monument belongs to the work of the sculptor Guillermo Ruiz. Kept inside are different murals that tell the life of this Mexican character who was born in Valladolid, today the city of Morelia. The paintings can be seen thanks to a staircase that climbs up to the fantastic viewpoint that offers panoramic views of the lake and Patzcuaro.

Only a Few people know that this emblematic sculpture measures one meter more than the Statue of Liberty in New York (without counting its base), so in reality, it is a rather tall and imposing monument.

Who was José María Morelos y Pavón?

José María Morelos y Pavón was one of the main heroes of the Mexican Independence and the author of the first Mexican Constitution. As we said, he was born in what is now the beautiful city of Morelia, a fact that fills the entire state of Michoacán with pride.

Every year, on September 30, Morelo ́s birthday is celebrated with great joy in Janitzio. Different dances, parades and celebrations take place on the streets and main squares in an honor rendition showcase. On the same day, the town also celebrates Saint Jerome, its patron saint, which is why the island is filled with excitement and happiness.
