Just a short drive from the beautiful city of Morelia is the quaint little Pueblo Magico of Patzcuaro. Although it’s an inviting destination to visit any time of year, Patzcuaro’s claim to fame is the extraordinary Day of the Dead celebration that takes place each year on the mysterious island of Janitzio.

There are many things to discover and things to do in Patzcuaro, but if you have just 24 hours to explore this Pueblo Magico, here are a list of the things you can’t miss.

Places to visit in Patzcuaro in a day

Everyone who visits Patzcuaro is struck by the colonial charm of its city center. Simply walking along its small, cobble stone streets and getting wrapped up in the traditional Mexican village atmosphere is itself a beautiful experience.

We recommend beginning the day in Patzcuaro by enjoying a cup of coffee or expresso in one of the coffee shops in the Plaza Grande. Admire the gorgeous colonial architecture and visit some of the most important religious temples in the city such as the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Salud, the Templo de la Compañía de Jesús and the Templo del Sagrario.

A few steps away is the Casa de los Once Patios, the House of 11 Patios, which has a unique history and is an example of the typical architecture in the state of Michoacán, Mexico. Today, the Casa de los Once Patios has become one of the main craft centers of the city, with exhibits of cultural and regional products for sale.

At noon, we recommend a boat ride to cross the lake of Patzcuaro and arrive at the island of Janitzio. On the way to the mysterious Janitzio island, you’ll be able to see Michoacan fishermen casting out their butterfly-shaped nets as they’ve done for centuries.

If you have time, visit the archaeological zone of Tzintzuntzan that has preserved the ruins of the Purépecha empire. It’s only ninety minutes from Patzcuaro, Mexico.

In the evening, return to the city and relax by the fireplace at our Tarasco restaurant, and enjoy exquisite dishes from the Michoacan regional cuisine.

After only 24 hours in Patzcuaro, Mexico, you’ll have discovered the essence of the beautiful Pueblo Magico and its surroundings.
